At Mindfulpaws, we are dedicated to your dog’s health and well-being. Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease that affects dogs and can also infect humans. Thankfully, with the right precautions and vaccinations, this disease is largely preventable.

What Is Leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is caused by infection with bacteria from the Leptospira family, which thrive in warm, wet environments like damp grass, stagnant water, mud, and lakes. These bacteria can survive outside the body for over three months under ideal conditions.

How Is It Spread?

Leptospirosis spreads through contact with the urine of infected animals. Dogs can contract the disease by:

  • Drinking, swimming in, or walking through contaminated water
  • Coming into contact with infected urine, soil, or surfaces
  • Exposure through cuts, mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth), or infected tissue

The bacteria can quickly enter the bloodstream, spreading to the kidneys, liver, spleen, and other organs.

Symptoms to Watch For

Leptospirosis symptoms vary, but early detection is critical. Look out for:

Flu-like Symptoms

    • Fever
    • Loss of appetite
    • Vomiting and diarrhea
    • Abdominal pain
    • Weakness and lethargy
    • Dehydration

Jaundice

    • A yellow tint in the gums or whites of the eyes

In severe cases, leptospirosis can lead to kidney or liver damage, causing increased thirst, shivering, and reluctance to move. Without prompt treatment, severe illness can lead to death.

Diagnosis and Treatment

If you suspect your dog has leptospirosis, contact your vet immediately. Early diagnosis through blood tests and a physical examination is vital. Treatment typically includes:

  • Antibiotics to fight the bacteria
  • Intravenous fluids to address dehydration
  • Supportive care to manage symptoms

While many dogs recover, some may require intensive care. Sadly, severe cases can result in death if left untreated or if organ damage is too extensive.

Prevention: Keeping Your Dog Safe

Vaccination is the best way to protect your dog from leptospirosis. Here’s how to reduce the risk:

  • Vaccinate: Ensure your puppy receives vaccinations at 9 and 12 weeks of age, with annual boosters for lifelong protection.
  • Avoid Stagnant Water: Prevent your dog from drinking or swimming in potentially contaminated water, especially during summer, autumn, or periods of heavy rainfall.
  • Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands thoroughly, especially after handling objects or areas exposed to dog urine.
  • Stay Vigilant in High-Risk Areas: Leptospirosis is common in areas where Brown Rats are present or after natural disasters like floods.
